History
The foundation of Community Action in America
Economic Opportunity Act
- 1964
Community Action Agencies were created by Lyndon B. Johnson's signing of the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964. The act embodies the philosophy that people with low incomes can best identify the issues their communities face and work alongside others to develop solutions to resolve them.
Comprehensive Community Services
- Present Day
Community Action Agencies (CAAs) receive funding from various sources, including the federal government's Community Services Block Grant (CSBG). These agencies offer a wide range of programs and services focusing on employment and training, health and nutrition, education and cognitive development, income and asset building, and housing.
The Promise of Community Action
“Community Action changes people’s lives, embodies the spirit of hope, improves communities, and makes America a better place to live. We care about the entire community, and we are dedicated to helping people help themselves and each other.”
— National Community Action Partnership
